Echoes of the old North: A new Viking experience at Panorama Glass Lodge

Some places are visited.
Others are felt.

At Panorama Glass Lodge, the land has always been more than a backdrop. It is an active presence. Shaped by volcanic forces, silence, and time, it invites a slower way of being. With Echoes of the Old North, we introduce a new Viking-inspired experience that deepens this connection. One that does not recreate history, but listens to it.

A Journey Rooted in the North

Echoes of the Old North draws inspiration from Norse mythology, ancient symbols such as runes and magic staves, and Icelandic storytelling traditions, translated into a contemporary, respectful experience. It unfolds across several carefully designed touchpoints on the property grounds, each inviting guests to pause, reflect, and engage with the forces that once shaped the North, and still quietly do.

The experience is self guided and intuitive. There is no fixed path, no right order. Guests move through it at their own pace, guided by curiosity and feel.

It is designed for those who feel more when there is less.

The Rune Circle and the Viking Throne

At the heart of the experience stands the Rune Circle, a stone formation engraved with Elder Futhark runes, the oldest known runic alphabet. These symbols once carried meaning beyond language, used not only to write but to mark, protect, and inspire.

At the center of the circle stands the Viking Throne.

Guests are invited to walk the circle slowly, to stop where a rune draws their attention, to read its meaning, and to reflect. There is no interpretation imposed. Only space to consider what resonates.

Sitting on the throne is not about power or conquest. It is about stillness. About taking a moment to observe the land from within the circle, to feel grounded rather than elevated. Some guests describe it as unexpectedly calming, even humbling.

Writing to the Unseen

Rune stones at the Panorama Glass Lodge

One of the most intimate moments of Echoes of the Old North takes place at a simple wooden table.

Guests are invited to write a short message using the ancient runic alphabet in the handmade wooden rune box provided in each Lodge. A wish, a question, a thought they are ready to release. The act itself is quiet and deliberate. Ink on paper. Rune stones resting nearby. Nothing digital. Nothing rushed.

The message is then placed into a black letter box on site. These letters are not read. They are not displayed. They are held until the right time.

Once a year, on the night of the summer solstice, all collected letters are gathered and offered to a ceremonial fire on site. A symbolic act inspired by ancient cycles of release and renewal. What is written returns to ash. What is carried forward is unseen.

For many guests, this becomes one of the most memorable parts of their stay.

The Battlefield

Echoes of the Old North also unfolds within our sand Battlefield, where myth meets heat and elemental force.

Surrounded by volcanic black sand stand handmade carved figurines of Odin, Thor, and Jörmungandr. Figures drawn from Norse mythology and the story of Ragnarök. Not as characters to worship, but as archetypes. Wisdom. Strength. Chaos. Renewal.

Inside the heat, guests rake the sand with the tiny axe, trace shapes, sit with the intensity and heat of the space. Ragnarök, often misunderstood as the end of the world, is in fact a story of rebirth. Of destruction that makes space for something new.

The sauna becomes a place to consider personal cycles. What has been resisted. What has grown stronger by being ignored. What might be released.

Because, even destruction can be sacred.

The Torfbæ and the Land

Across the grounds, small turf houses inspired by traditional Icelandic torfbæ (farmhouses) sit quietly within the landscape. They are not presented as fantasy dwellings or folklore replicas. They are architectural echoes of how people once lived in close relationship with the land and its raw power.

Guests are encouraged to sit nearby. To touch the grass. To listen.

This part of the experience is intentionally understated. No instructions. No narrative overlay. Just a reminder that silence itself can be meaningful, and that connection does not always require explanation.

Filmed in Twilight, Experienced in Stillness

The visual language of Echoes of the Old North is deliberately restrained. Overcast skies. Twilight light. Natural textures of stone, wood, sand, and fire. The experience was filmed and designed with a cinematic sensibility inspired by Nordic storytelling rather than spectacle.

It is meant to be felt in the body, not consumed quickly. Here you can get a feeling of how the experience could look for you: Youtube Video Echoes of the Old North
